A requirement by an insurance carrier that medical services be approved by the insurer or their contracted third party before the service is allowed to be rendered. A preauthorization is not a referral.
Most insurance carriers require preauthorization for MRI, MRA, CT Scan, CTA, PET Scans. It is in your best interest to contact your carrier to ensure proper authorization requirements are being followed prior to your appointment.
If you have an HMO plan, it is likely a referral from your primary physician is required for your radiology service. Open Access plans usually defer this requirement. However, it is always in your best interest to check with your carrier and ask for referral and precertification requirements before any diagnostic testing is scheduled.
